Program Description
This program is a focused, two-year study of fine arts with a strong grounding in principles of design, practical studio practices, and art history. The Associate in Fine Arts degree is intended primarily for students who plan to transfer to another college to complete a baccalaureate degree in fine art. It can be considered as the first two years of a four-year program in Fine Arts.

MnTC/General Education Requirements
Goal 2: Critical Thinking
Fulfilled when all MnTC goals for this degree are complete.
Goal 3 and/or 4: Natural Sciences/Math/Logical Reasoning
Minimum of 6 credits; two course from either Goal 3 and/or Goal 4.
NOTE: Goal 3 courses do not have to be lab courses. Goal 4 courses must be numbered between MATH 1025 and MATH 1082 , or PHIL 1041
Goal 5: History/Social/Behavioral Sciences
Minimum of 6 credits. Two courses from two different disciplines.
Goal 6: Humanities/Fine Arts
Minimum of 15 credits.
Goals 7-10: Theme Goals
Three credits in each of two Goal areas selected from Goals 7, 8, 9 or 10 are required. Many courses from Goals 1-6 also meet Goals 7-10. One course may fulfill a maximum of two Goals. Credits count only once.

Students may take ART 1022 before ART 1021 if they are starting in spring semester. Select appropriate courses according to the graduation requirements of your transfer institution

This degree program is intended primarily for transfer to a four-year institution. If you are considering the possibility of transfer, you are encouraged to talk with your advisor, counselor, or program instructor before registering to discuss your goals and develop a plan. An articulation agreement exists with Metropolitan State University and Minnesota State University-Mankato. Students transferring to Metropolitan State University and MSU Mankato should expect to take an additional 12 credits of MnTC credits including up to 7 credits of Goal 3 and/or Goal 4. Students planning to transfer to the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, should consult the U of M “Liberal Education” transfer guide for choices for the general education requirements in this AFA degree or you may want to complete Century’s entire 40 credit Minnesota Transfer Curriculum (MnTC).
Program Learning Outcomes
At the end of this program students will be able to:
- Create and present a professional portfolio of artwork.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the Art Historical and critical discourse common to the Art and Design field.
- Demonstrate an ethical awareness of diversity within society and the discourse of those issues.
- Demonstrate an understanding of design concepts to an aesthetic purpose.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the critical analysis of ideas and artwork as well as sound studio work.
