Program Description
The Associate in Science in Education provides students with a core of education coursework and field experiences with diverse populations for those seeking a career in community schools. Students will learn culturally relevant approaches for teaching and learning. This degree fulfills the education requirements for paraprofessionals as “highly qualified” under federal law (Title I schools) and includes Minnesota Standards of Effective Practice for Teachers for those intending to transfer into a four-year teacher licensure program. Students seeking a degree in Elementary Education should declare the Elementary Education Foundation Transfer Pathway AS degree. Check specific transfer arrangements with the university and a Century College counselor or advisor early and often to ensure an appropriate program is planned for enrollment at Century and at the university.

A MN Human Services Background Study will likely be required for education field experiences. Individuals who have been arrested, charged, or convicted of any criminal offense should investigate the impact that the arrest, charge, or conviction may have on their chances of employment in the field of Education. Fulfilled when all MnTC goals for this degree are complete.
Goal 3 and/or 4: Natural Sciences/Math/Logical Reasoning
Minimum of 6 credits. Contact advisor/counselor for transfer college requirements and/or select based on content courses in teaching field of interest or educational/career goal.
Goal 5: History/Social/Behavioral Sciences
Minimum of 6 credits. Two courses from two different disciplines. Contact advisor/counselor for transfer college requirements and/or select based on content courses in teaching field of interest or educational/career.
Goal 6: Humanities/Fine Arts
Minimum of 6 credits. Two courses from two different disciplines. Contact advisor/counselor for transfer college requirements and/or select based on content courses in teaching field of interest or educational/career goal.
Goals 7-10: Theme Goals
Three credits in two Goal areas selected from Goals 7, 8, 9 or 10 are required. Many courses from Goals 1-6 also meet Goals 7-10. One course may fulfill a maximum of two Goals. Credits count only once.

Students in the Associate in Science Education program are required to complete a minimum of 40 hours of approved practicums or field experiences. A MN Human Services Background Check may be required. Transportation is not provided.

Program Note
If transferring to earn a bachelor’s degree, completing the full 40 credit MnTC is highly recommended. For Career Electives, include additional MnTC courses in the 13 credits and/or 4 credits of MnTC electives. Select courses based on content courses in teaching field of interest or educational/career goal. Review your MnTC DARS and contact your advisor/counselor for required courses. Consult with an advisor at your intended transfer school for course recommendations.

This degree program is designed for both employment preparation and transfer. Some of the courses may not transfer to a number of four-year colleges. If you are considering the possibility of transfer, you may wish to talk with your advisor, counselor, or program instructor before registering to discuss your goals, look at programs designed for transfer, and develop a plan. Articulation agreements exit with Concordia University and College of St. Scholastica.
