Program Description

The Criminal Justice AS degree is designed to provide students with a broad-based liberal arts education as well as comprehensive knowledge of the criminal justice system to help prepare them for the rigors of the criminal justice profession. Coursework illustrates the social, legal, and ethical issues relevant to the criminal justice professional today. Completion of the AS degree also provides a foundation allowing student to transfer to a four-year academic institution.

Special Instructions

Students are required to complete 50 hours of criminal justice related service learning to complete this program. This requirement will be met upon completion of CJS 2081  and CJS 2085  with a grade of C or higher. Students are advised not to enroll in both classes during the same semester.

Program Note

The Criminal Justice AS degree is intended for students who want to work in the Criminal Justice System in a non-sworn or civilian capacity.  For students who want to be a sworn Law Enforcement officer it is recommended to pursue the Law Enforcement AS degree. Please consult with your Century advisor, counselor, or program instructors for more information.
Please contact the PPOE Coordinator for Century College if you  completed CJS 2081 and/or CJS 2085 more than 5 years ago (Century or equivalent courses that were successfully completed at another PPOE-certified school) to determine whether the POST objectives have been met and you may be eligible for an appeal to the 5-year rule.

Transfer, Articulation Agreements, and Partnerships

This degree program is designed for both employment preparation and transfer. Some of the courses may not transfer to a number of four-year colleges. If you are considering the possibility of transfer, you may wish to talk with your advisor, counselor, or program instructor before registering to discuss your goals, look at programs designed for transfer, and develop a plan. An articulation agreement exists with this degree and Metropolitan State University.

Program Learning Outcomes

At the end of this program students will be able to:

  • Examine the interaction between police organizations, the courts, corrections, and the community in the administration of justice.
  • Analyze lifelong ethical and professional responsibilities of criminal justice personnel in the administration of justice.
  • Demonstrate effective decision making, critical thinking, and communication skills in written and verbal form.
  • Understand hiring practices, training evolutions, subcultures, attitudes and orientation of criminal justice professionals.
  • Have the requisite knowledge, skill and ability to transfer successfully into the 3rd year of baccalaureate degrees in criminal justice or related fields at other colleges and universities.
