Program Description

Students who earn the Interior Design Associate in Applied Science award are prepared to meet the exciting challenges and innovations in the field. They will have experience in designing for customer/client needs, designing interior furnishings of residences, using Computer-Aided Design, and specifying and selling the products and services required to implement the designs. Graduates will have acquired a foundation enabling them to design residential spaces for all individual lifestyles and abilities, with a focus on universal design, global perspectives, aging in place, as well as other innovative design specialties.

Program Prerequisites

  1. Course placement into college-level English and Reading OR completion of ENGL 0950  with a grade of C or higher OR completion of RDNG 0940  with a grade of C or higher and qualifying English Placement Exam OR completion of RDNG 0950  with a grade of C or higher and ENGL 0090  with a grade of C or higher OR completion of ESOL 0051  with a grade of C or higher and ESOL 0052  with a grade of C or higher.
  2. Those individuals with prior higher education/college credits may be exempt from ENGL and RDNG placement testing and/or prerequisites with proof of course completion; official transcripts for all prior colleges must be sent to the college for exemption evaluations.
  3. INTD 1040 - Elements of Interior Design  with a grade of C or higher is a prerequisite for many Interior Design courses. INTD 1040  is only offered in the Fall Semester.

Special Instructions

A laptop computer is required for the Interior Design program. Please coordinate with the Interior Design department faculty to confirm your computer can run the computer aided design software needed for coursework.

Program Learning Outcomes

At the end of this program students will be able to:

  • Perform competencies in Marketing, Business, and Sales as it relates to the Interior Design Industry.
  • Demonstrate space planning skills though critical thinking as it applies to the Interior Design Industry.
  • Perform competencies in compliance with all State and National codes.
  • Demonstrate the ability to extrapolate and apply knowledge to new technology and software as it applies to the Interior Design Industry.
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills and the ability to collaborate with other team members, industry professionals and designers.
