RADT 2783 - Clinical Radiography III

Credits: 8

Course Description: This course is designed to provide the student with opportunities to master performance competencies and gain additional experience in all areas of diagnostic radiology. Emphasis is placed on fluoroscopic, surgical and trauma radiography. Students will be assigned in the special imaging modalities of computed tomography and angiography.  Assigned rotations to an area childrens hospital provides additional experience in pediatric radiology. Students who elect to pursue the MQSA mammography certificate will rotate through the mammography department for a one-week orientation rotation.  Students will assist with and perform radiographic procedures under the direction of a qualified practitioner at affiliated clinical sites.  State regulations regarding safe operation of radiation-generating equipment will be followed and proper radiation safety practices will be adhered to. Students must be able to perform physical tasks to complete course requirements. This course requires students to be concurrently enrolled in RADT 2020  and RADT 2030  and a Minnesota Human Services background study with no restrictions.

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course students will be able to:

  1. perform skull radiographic procedures with direct supervision until competency has been achieved by applying theoretical content covered in RADT 1020 - Fundamentals of Radiography , RADT 1031 - Anatomy and Positioning I , RADT 1032 - Anatomy and Positioning II , RADT 1040 - Radiographic Exposure Factors , and RADT 2000 - Radiation Biology and Protection .
  2. adapt radiographic procedures to patient age, size, and condition with technologist supervision as presented in RADT 1020 - Fundamentals of Radiography , RADT 1031 - Anatomy and Positioning I , RADT 1032 - Anatomy and Positioning II , RADT 1040 - Radiographic Exposure Factors , and RADT 2000 - Radiation Biology and Protection .
  3. apply basic radiation safety practices when performing all radiographic procedures using the ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable) principle as discussed in the theoretical content of RADT 1040 - Radiographic Exposure Factors  and RADT 2000 - Radiation Biology and Protection  to protect patients, hospital personnel and self.
  4. perform routine surgical procedures, including supervised operation of the C-Arm.
  5. perform portable radiography performance competencies by applying the theoretical components of RADT 1031 - Anatomy and Positioning I , RADT 1032 - Anatomy and Positioning II , RADT 1040 - Radiographic Exposure Factors , and RADT 2000 - Radiation Biology and Protection ,.
  6. perform routine radiographic / fluoroscopic procedures with increased confidence, efficiency and accuracy by applying the theoretical components of RADT 1031 - Anatomy and Positioning I  and RADT 1032 - Anatomy and Positioning II , RADT 1040 - Radiographic Exposure Factors , and RADT 2000 - Radiation Biology and Protection ..
  7. prepare room and assist with minor special procedures, i.e. myelograms, arthrograms, joint injections, hysterosalpingogram by applying theory of sterile technique as presented in RADT 1020 - Fundamentals of Radiography .
  8. perform radiographic procedures in which competency has been achieved with minimal assistance by applying theoretical components RADT 1020 - Fundamentals of Radiography , RADT 1031 - Anatomy and Positioning I , RADT 1032 - Anatomy and Positioning II , RADT 1040 - Radiographic Exposure Factors , and RADT 2000 - Radiation Biology and Protection .
  9. Assist in special imaging modality of Computed Tomography by applying theoretical content of RADT 1032 - Anatomy and Positioning II , RADT 2000 - Radiation Biology and Protection , and RADT 2020 - Introduction to Sectional Anatomy .
  10. assist with multiple and trauma radiographic examinations applying theoretical concepts discussed in RADT 1031 - Anatomy and Positioning I , RADT 1032 - Anatomy and Positioning II , RADT 1040 - Radiographic Exposure Factors , and RADT 2000 - Radiation Biology and Protection .
  11. discuss the relevant theoretical content of RADT 1031 - Anatomy and Positioning I , RADT 1032 - Anatomy and Positioning II , RADT 1040 - Radiographic Exposure Factors , and RADT 2000 - Radiation Biology and Protection  during Image Analysis sessions with Clinical Coordinator.
  12. perform digital computed radiography (CR) processing by applying the theoretical components discussed in RADT 1040 - Radiographic Exposure Factors .
  13. select appropriate exposure factors by applying the theoretical content of RADT 1040 - Radiographic Exposure Factors , and RADT 2000 - Radiation Biology and Protection .
