OFFT 2013 - Medical Office: Pharmacology and Lab Medicine Credits: 2 Hours/Week: Lecture 2 Lab 0 Internship hours per week 0 Course Description: This course is intended for students interested in medical office careers. It is a system-by-system overview of the principles and language of pharmacology and laboratory medicine, including drugs and drug classes, diagnostic tests, indications, techniques, expressions of values, and significance of findings for effective medical documentation. Prerequisite(s): Completion of or concurrently enrolled in OFFT 2010. Note: Students concurrently enrolled in prerequisite course must contact Instructor or Records Office for verification to register. Corequisite(s): None Recommendation: Concurrently enrolled in OFFT 2012 .
Major Content - Procedures, techniques, and findings in diagnostic and interventional imaging.
- Common drug classes, forms, dosages, and routes of administration.
- Common tests in pathology and laboratory medicine.
- Pharmacologic terminology.
- Normal lab values and ranges
- Use of reference materials.
Learning Outcomes At the end of this course students will be able to:
- define pharmacologic nomenclature and principles organized by body systems.
- classify routes of administration.
- define the relationship of drug classes with disease processes and medical specialties.
- identify commonly prescribed medications, including indications, actions, dosages, and routes of administration.
- demonstrate use of pharmacology and laboratory reference materials.
- identify lab testing methods and procedures used for various diseases and conditions, organized by body systems.
- identify normal lab values and ranges.
