TRIN 2036 - Interpreting in Healthcare

Credits: 2

Course Description: This course provides an overview of healthcare settings and offers students opportunities to develop their interpreting skills in this field. It also provides an overview of current national certification exams for medical interpreters. Coursework includes theoretical knowledge and practical application of interpreting in the healthcare setting.

Major Content
  1. Types of medical settings and encounters
    1.   Most commonly encountered conditions and procedures
    2. Review of specialized terminology.
  2. Special issues encountered in interpreting in healthcare (jargon, register, etc)
  3. Role(s) of the interpreter in healthcare
  4. Overview of national certification for medical interpreters a. Review of standards of practice and codes of ethics b. Review and practice of interpreting modes

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course students will be able to:

  1. discuss the different types of encounters in healthcare, including commonly encountered conditions and procedures.
  2. discuss the role(s) of the interpreter in healthcare settings and issues related to dual-role interpreters.
  3. analyze complex and challenging situations related to interpreting in healthcare.
  4. implement strategies to deal with complex and challenging situations that may arise in interpreting in healthcare.
  5. describe the basic requirements for the national certification exams for medical interpreters.
