Program Description

This program is designed for students with a Bachelor degree interested in the field of addiction counseling. The program prepares graduates for the written test and oral examination which is required for the state license. Consult with program instructor or the Board for Behavioral Health Therapy website for the most up-to-date information on licensure requirements and the temporary permit to practice requirements.

Program Prerequisites

Students are required to have completed a Bachelor’s degree or higher to enter this certificate program.

Special Instructions

A MN Human Services Background Study with no restrictions is required for the internships.  Please contact a program instructor for any questions or concerns about the background study.

Completing ADCO 1020  as soon as possible provides the student with important information about the profession and is also a prerequisite for all other ADCO courses.  It is recommended that students consult with their advisor or counselor for academic planning assistance.

Program Note

A grade of C or higher in all career/occupational courses and all specific MnTC/general education course requirements is required.

Licensure information:

A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited school or educational program is required for licensure.  Eighteen semester credits of alcohol and drug counseling academic course work; 880 clock hours of supervised alcohol and drug counseling practicum, and written examination that demonstrates competence in the core functions must also be successfully completed for licensure.

This program is intended primarily for employment preparation rather than transfer to a four-year institution. Some courses may not transfer to a number of four-year colleges. If you are considering the possibility of transfer, you may wish to talk with your advisor, counselor, or program instructor before registering to discuss your goals, look at programs designed for transfer, and develop a plan.

Program Learning Outcomes

At the end of this program students will be able to:

  • Implement the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of Professional Practice of addiction counseling according to TAP 21.
  • Apply the established diagnostic criteria for substance use disorder and describe treatment modalities and placement criteria within the continuum of care.
  • Apply laws, rules and ethical guidelines related to the State of Minnesota and the addiction profession.
  • Apply a variety of models and theories of addiction and other problems related to substance use.
  • Determine the clients readiness for treatment and change as well as the needs of others involved in current situations.
