Program Description

This Associate of Fine Arts program is a focused, two-year study of music that includes music theory, ear training, sight singing, music history, the study of a specific instrument or voice, and ensemble participation. This degree is intended primarily for students who plan to transfer to another college to complete a baccalaureate degree in music. It can be considered as the first two years of a four-year degree program in music.  This program has an articulation agreement with Minnesota State University-Mankato. This program contains core requirements in music and general education courses for possible transfer to other four year institutions as well.

Program Prerequisites

Prospective students are expected to have, at minimum, a basic competency level of musicianship (voice or primary instrument) and a basic music reading ability. Students must consult with the music faculty before beginning the Associate of Fine Arts in Music program.

Special Instructions

This model course sequence is designed for a fall semester start date. Students starting in a spring or summer semester should contact their academic advisor or counselor to develop a plan.

Program Note

Piano Proficiency is required by transfer institutions for a Baccalaureate degree in Music. Class Piano for Music Majors (MUSC 1026 ) is recommended for students in MUSC 1061 /MUSC 1071 .

This degree program is intended primarily for transfer to a four-year institution. If you are considering the possibility of transfer, you are encouraged to talk with your advisor, counselor, or program instructor before registering to discuss your goals and develop a plan. An Articulation Agreement exists with Minnesota State University-Mankato. Students planning to transfer to the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, should consult the U of M “Liberal Education” transfer guide for choices for the general education requirements in this AFA degree or you may want to complete Century’s entire 40 credit Minnesota General Education Transfer Curriculum.

Program Learning Outcomes

At the end of this program students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate, through concentrated study of a primary instrument (or voice), artistry, technical ability, improvisation skills, and knowledge of repertoire representative of that instrument/voice
  • Participate effectively as part of a performance ensemble
  • Demonstrate knowledge of music theory and notation
  • Demonstrate knowledge of music history in the Western art tradition
  • Demonstrate facility in ear training and sight-singing skills
  • Demonstrate proficiency in keyboard skills
