Program Description
The Cosmetology degree includes instruction in theory and practical application techniques of hair, skin, and nail services. Instruction in hair care services includes analysis of hair, styling, cutting, coloring, permanent waving, and chemical hair relaxing. Instruction in nail care services includes analysis of nails, shaping, polishing, massage of hands and feet, and the application of artificial nails. Instruction in skin care services includes analysis of skin, skin exfoliation, massage techniques, facial services, makeup application, waxing services, and eyelash services. Completion of this degree prepares students to take the state written exams and complete the practical skill test as required by Minnesota cosmetology laws and rules for licensure. Students will also have general education requirements that will help individuals have the necessary oral, written, and critical thinking skills to help them with their professional and management responsibilities.
Program Prerequisites
Course placement into ENGL 0950 and RDNG 0950 or above OR completion of RDNG 0940 with a grade of C or higher OR course placement into ESOL 0041 and ESOL 0052 and ESOL 1033 OR completion of ESOL 0031 with a grade of C or higher and ESOL 0042 with a grade of C or higher and ESOL 0043 with a grade of C or higher.

Program Learning Outcomes
At the end of this program students will be able to:

Apply academic and skill proficiency at an entry level for hair, skin, and nail care services.

Demonstrate effective and appropriate communication with clients.

Analyze clients’ needs and preferences, recommending products and services as appropriate.

Identify and interpret Minnesota cosmetology rules and laws.

Apply ethical business practices in the salon.

Demonstrate proper safety and sanitation, safe handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous waste as governed by Minnesota laws and rules.

Apply knowledge and skills during the state practical and written exam process.

Use oral, written, and critical thinking skills to help them with their professional and management responsibilities.
